The Importance of Drug Addiction Treatment

Be it drugs, alcohol, or certain medications, the addiction caused by them is something very difficult to get rid of alone. In most cases, people need professional help and great support from the family. This is where rehabilitation centers come into play. They provide guidance and assistance at all levels: physical, psychological, mental, and spiritual.

So, how exactly rehabilitation centers work, and what are services provided in such places? This definitive guide is here to explain the basics of rehab functioning and help you make the right choice.

Types Of Addiction

In the majority of rehabilitation centers, specialists treat several types of addiction, such as pathological gambling addiction, cyber addiction, sexual addiction, and traumatic stress disorder. They also offer treatments related to the most popular addictions to the general public: alcohol, drug, and prescription medication dependence.

  • Alcohol addiction. People with alcohol addiction are often aware that their use is problematic for their health. As soon as a patient arrives, our experts carry out a complete assessment of his or her profile (consumption profile, withdrawal potential, parallel disorders such as anxiety or bipolarity as well as the factors that may favor or interfere with rehabilitation).
  • Drug addiction. Drug addiction should be taken care of as soon as a person uses it at risk. When a patient needs to be treated for drug addiction, our treatment experts take a series of steps to help them fully understand each person’s condition.
  • Medication dependence. Drug dependence is a dependence on drugs, mainly prescription drugs. Addictive drugs are excellent for masking pain the day after surgery or for improving concentration. Treatment of drug dependence is necessary when drug use becomes problematic.

Signs Of Drug Addiction

There are three levels of substance use: recreational use, risky use, and addiction. This last level is a well-pronounced drug/alcohol addiction. This is the most serious type of use since the person loses their freedom and can no longer control their drug use.

The result is addiction. To prevent addiction, the signs of drug dependence should be recognized from the second level of consumption, that is, from risky use. At this point, a person no longer uses recreationally: they use it because they need it, but they are at risk of developing substance abuse problems.

What are the signs of drug addiction?

  • Behavioral changes: The behaviors of a person with a drug addiction can be altered. The person can become irritable, impulsive, they can isolate themselves and neglect their appearance and hygiene, etc.
  • Loss of interest: Drug addiction overnight changes a person’s interest in activities and hobbies that were once popular.
  • Physical signs: Drug addicts often have red eyes or dilated pupils, lack of sleep, but great fatigue, dry mouth, and confusion in words and actions, etc.

The causes of addiction can be various, from the environment in which a person grew up to genetics or friends around. It is important to know how to recognize the state of our consumption in order to prevent addiction.

About Detoxification

Detoxification is the sudden cessation of the use of psychoactive substances. This is the first step in treating addictions. Also called withdrawal, this phase of the healing process aims to remove all harmful substances from the body of patients with addiction problems.

Several symptoms can appear as a result of detoxification. These symptoms are called ‘withdrawal syndrome’. It is for this reason that this process requires the best resources and the best interveners: the patient must feel good despite everything that his body is going through.

Detoxification is followed by a complete patient assessment during which the professionals at a clinic will make their recommendations as to the duration of the program. The timeline of treatment varies according to each person since the level of consumption differs from one individual to another. No matter how long a treatment lasts, rehab’s goal is to successfully curb the problems associated with addiction and provide patients with care in a peaceful and comfortable environment.

Reasons To Undergo Treatment

When one becomes addicted to alcohol and suffers the consequences of chronic alcoholism, it may become essential to stop drinking. However, alcohol/drug withdrawal is a very delicate phase, and; In some people, withdrawal symptoms can be overwhelming and difficult to overcome: this is the case, for example, with delirium tremens. In such a situation, starting a drug treatment may be the best solution.

Besides, for some people, home withdrawal is unthinkable, and again, detoxification seems to be the most appropriate treatment. This is the case for:

  • heavy drinkers;
  • single people without family members nearby;
  • people with depression;
  • people who have already tried a failed alcohol/drug withdrawal.

Detoxification Center: Lifebuoy For Addicted People

A recovery center plays an important role in the recovery of patients, from the first day, that is to say from the detoxification treatments. In many cases, ensuring a presence during this stage is essential for the rest of things: that creates strong bonds of trust with patients. Practice shows that friendly relationships with patients help them in their healing process and their social reintegration.

Many rehabilitation centers offer residential treatment when everything is done in-house. Specialized professionals, counselors, and nurses are therefore able to take charge of the withdrawal syndrome and 24-hour monitoring. Hence, patients are never left to themselves.

Detoxification methods include abruptly stopping the use of psychoactive substances as well as a thorough assessment of the patient. The aim of these methods is to offer the best detoxification treatments adapted to each patient.

The centers are aimed at people who are addicted to illegal drugs, medication, alcohol, or certain psychoactive products, and who wish to end their addiction. Some centers cater to patients in crisis.

Main Objectives Of Rehab Centers

The general goal of care is to restart the process of development of the people concerned to put an end to drug addiction and to allow reintegration into social and professional life. The treatments have a limited duration. They are oriented towards the exit of the patient. They are not intended to provide specialized reception or accommodation to patients.

Approaches and services offered by rehab centers

They provide care in the form of residential or outpatient follow-ups. The treatment plans are varied and adapted to different situations. They consist of the following modalities:

  • They are provided by psychologists, psychiatrists, speech therapists, physiotherapists or psychomotor therapists, specialized educators, social workers, etc.
  • Intensive outpatient programs. They occupy each day, the greater part of the patient’s time in the center
  • Traditional outpatient programs. They consist of a few weekly contacts with a patient.
  • Individual, family, or in small groups. They target difficulties or skills which are specific to each patient and which are addressed in counseling sessions with the patient alone, in the presence of members of his entourage, or in a group.
  • Community-based. Some centers operate as a “therapeutic community”. In these cases, the patient becomes part of a community of peers for a fixed period of time.

The centers assess each patient’s progress at regular intervals to decide whether to maintain, modify, or terminate the treatment plan.

Services and Treatment Routine

Treatment services vary from place to place, but all are provided by qualified workers who:

  • Explain the effects of alcohol and drugs on your life.
  • Will plan the treatment with you.
  • Put you in touch with other services you may need.
  • Help you develop skills that will allow you to lead a healthy and balanced life.
  • Help you set and achieve goals.
  • Offer individual and group counseling sessions.
  • Provide information and support to members of your family.
  • Teach you how to avoid relapses and how to deal with them if they occur.

What To Do When You Start

It is the patient himself who must make the request and therefore be consenting to enter the clinic and follow his detoxification treatment. If you consider undergoing treatment in such a center, it’s important to undergo a few simple but important steps.

  1. Choose your path

Once you realize that you are addicted to alcohol, the first step is to talk to your family doctor. They can refer you to a detoxification center. If you are resistant to hospitalization and your degree of dependence allows it, there is the possibility of outpatient detoxification: medical monitoring is daily, but the patient goes home every evening.

  1. Ask yourself the right questions

To choose the detox treatment that’s right for you, follow your doctor’s advice and ask yourself the right questions:

  • Am I motivated enough?
  • Won’t the temptation be too hard if I come home every night?
  • Will I be supported by those around me?
  1. Calculate the cost

Now when you are determined to undergo treatment, it’s important to figure out the cost of treatment in advance. Some rehabs accept all medical insurances, some – don’t. Contact them in advance to find out whether you can afford treatment and which payment options are valid.

After a detoxification

Treating alcohol addiction sometimes requires more than detox. This is why aftercare has been put in place. These aftercare services welcome weaned people wishing to receive additional support. They usually last between 1 and 3 months.

The continuation of psychotherapy started during the treatment, as well as the participation in a support group, are all means to put in place to limit as much as possible the risk of relapse.

Treatment steps

The overall stages of the treatments offered are the same for all patients. However, the staff offers personalized treatment plans according to each individual’s situation. When a patient needs to be treated for drug addiction, treatment experts take a series of steps to fully understand each person’s condition.

As a rule, rehabs offer a 6-week internal program and an outpatient program of a minimum of 12 weeks. For both programs, the objectives are to promote the rehabilitation of patients through learning. During the healing process, the patient will be able to:

  • Understand that his addiction is a disease
  • Understand the consequences of his dependence on his life and that of those around him
  • Develop an abstinence plan and a relapse prevention plan according to your situation
  • Learn to deal with the warning signs and triggers of relapse.

Following the inpatient program, clients undergo an outpatient program for a minimum of 12 weeks during which they have weekly follow-ups with our treatment experts. The objective of the outpatient program is to prepare the patient to return to his living environment.

Medicinal Treatments

Also, rehabs can provide various medication therapies and special treatment modalities in emergency cases and during the withdrawal stage.

In cases of overdose coma, the only antidote to opioids is NARCAN® (whose active substance is Naloxone). It is a pure Morphine antagonist used to treat opioid-related respiratory depression.

Also, there is a shock weaning procedure. The shock weaning or “sudden method” is simple: you stop all at once and without any drug support. Many addicts have tried it at one point or another in their journey, but few have come out (for products causing drug dependence). During hospital weaning, hospitalization lasts for 7 to 10 days during which the patient is undergoing mild drug treatment.

Electrotherapy is an experimental method that’s provided by a few centers only. Applying electrodes to certain areas of the body stimulates the production of endorphins and thus alleviates the lack. During such treatment modality, specialists use current through electrodes placed on the temples and between the two eyes. The cure lasts from five to seven days and is sometimes supplemented by light drug treatment.
